The South Coast of Maine, just a short hop from Boston, is a vacation paradise for anyone who loves sandy beaches, small New England towns, outlet shopping, and fresh lobster. The towns of the area include the Yorks, Wells, Ogunquit, the Kennebunks, and Old Orchard Beach. Among the pleasures of the region are the chance to explore lighthouses, rocky shores, and boutiques; to dine on lobster and other seafoods; and to shop at quaint stores and outlets. The South Coast has plenty of joys for adults, and it is also perfect for children and families.
The York region includes the towns of Kittery, Eliot, York, South Berwick and Cape Neddick. Kittery is the location of the Kittery Outlets, a huge draw for bargain-hunters. York is home to the majestic Short Sands and Long Sands beaches; they are wide, filled with people enjoying swimming, beach games, and picnics, but close to the main street and restaurants. Overseeing the town is the Nubble (Cape Neddick) Lighthouse on an island close to shore. People enjoy it with gusto from neighboring Sohier Park in all seasons, especially at the Holiday Lighting of the Nubble with Santa. York's Wild Kingdom is a fun zoo experience, and fans of local history will love the Old York Historical Society and Jefferds Tavern, hosting many events for the public.
Ogunquit, another lovely town of the region, is the place to visit the galleries. Save an afternoon to walk the famed Marginal Way, which travels along the coast from Perkins Cove to Ogunquit Beach. Other entertainments in Ogunquit include the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and the Ogunquit Playhouse, a grand old summer-stock theater.
The town of Kennebunkport first prospered as a shipbuilding center and was discovered in the late 1800s by affluent summer visitors. Kennebunkport is full of fine dining establishments and high-end accommodations, but it is possible to find moderately price lodgings and food. A must-see attraction is a scenic drive along Ocean Avenue, with majestic views of the Maine coastline.
