Greater Portland & Casco Bay attractions take visitors to the heart of Maine culture
The charming city of Portland, on Casco Bay, has so many distinctively Maine pleasures and attractions it is hard to know where to begin. The city – smallish and very walkable – has become known as a center of excellent and innovative dining. Nightclubs fill the downtown with original, live music and there’s fun shopping and people-watching in the restored Port district. You can walk about and photographer Portland Head Light in Fort Williams Park or jump on a ferry to getaway islands in the Bay. The city has a fine art museum and equally entrancing children’s museum. Just 20 miles north of Portland is the town of Freeport and the world-famous L.L. Bean, maker of outdoor clothing and gear. Lodging cover the gamut, from a cozy spot for a romantic getaway to a hotel or inn that welcomes your dog!
